The aim of the course is to give an overview of how you might want to start, develop and grow a small business. Learners will experience several different businesses centred around food, plants, animals and rural leisure. This course is for anyone who is interested or simply curious to find out a little more about working for yourself. You do not necessarily have to want to do your own business to enrol onto this course.
Who is the course aimed at?
The course is aimed at Staffordshire residents aged 19+ who live in a Staffordshire not Stoke-on-Trent postcode. The course is for individuals experiencing or recovering from mental ill health or people who have a learning difficulty/disability or unemployed and want to support their wellbeing and independence.
Entry Requirements
There are no entry requirements but an interest in working for yourself and exploring different business areas would be beneficial. Potential learners must be willing to commit to all course sessions and be willing to work towards learning aims and complete a learner journal. Learning support is available throughout your course if required.
Course Content
I would like to have my own business, but I am not sure how it is done, is this you? Learn step by step how to start your business on this exciting taster course! You will get to meet several people who have experienced different pathways before finding their ultimate business. Learn how set yourself achievable goals and develop ideas with a simple business plan to get you started.
Learning Methods
Face to face learning in a classroom or outdoor learning environment, using a variety of learning styles and activities. Offsite learning at small business venues / establishments.
Learner Support
Learning support is offered throughout the course to meet learners’ needs, whether it be a scribe, a reading pen, an Ipad or 1:1 classroom support to build confidence and guide learners in the right direction.
Course assessment
Learners will be reviewed at the start, middle and end of the course. Learners will be given the opportunity each week to reflect with their learning and identify where they may need extra support to achieve their desired learning goals and to enable their full enjoyment of their course or pursue additional areas of interest. Learners will reflect on their learning half way through the course with a mid-term review and again at the end of the course with an end of learner course evaluation.
Course Materials
All materials needed for the course will be supplied. Please bring a packed lunch unless you are attending a course where lunch is provided. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for a farm and animal environment and take into account the weather conditions on the day. Refreshments are provided for all course days and personal protective equipment where required.

Learners may be interested in the STEM course in Getting Closer to the Workplace. Family learning courses are also available in Family Fun on a Budget and Family Learning with Nature. Learners may wish to do similar courses with other providers.
