Family Fun on a Budget

A fun packed learning course that offers meaningful learning activities that can be carried out by the whole family. The course will include: animal care, gardening, nature walks, mini bugs and beasts, woodworking and scavenger hunts – this course offers outdoor classroom learning activities that can be taught to the whole family.

Who is the course aimed at?

The course is aimed at Staffordshire residents aged 19+ who live in a Staffordshire not Stoke-on-Trent postcode. The course is for individuals experiencing or recovering from mental ill health or people who have a learning difficulty/disability or unemployed and want to support their wellbeing and independence.

Entry Requirements

No prior knowledge or experience is required but an interest in the countryside, gardening, animals and nature would be an advantage. Potential learners must be willing to commit to all course sessions and be willing to work towards learning aims and complete a learner journal. Learning support is available throughout your course if required.

Course Content

Explore ways to teach your family about first time gardening, grow seasonal vegetables and flowers and learn about how you can support nature too. Take part in a woodworking upcycling project by making an insect home for the garden. Go on a scavenger hunt /foraging walk to get creative and artistic in making wall art using naturally sourced materials. Explore family cooking and baking using ingredients from the garden and visit a local historical site to learn about your community’s unique culture. Meet our small animals and learn how animals can be good for family health and wellbeing.

Learning Methods

Face to face learning in a classroom or outdoor learning environment, using a variety of learning styles and activities suitable for all the family.

Learner Support

Learning support is offered throughout the course to meet learners’ needs, whether it be a scribe, a reading pen, an Ipad or 1:1 classroom support to build confidence and guide learners in the right direction.

Course assessment

Learners will be reviewed at the start, middle and end of the course. Learners will be given the opportunity each week to reflect with their learning and identify where they may need extra support to achieve their desired learning goals and to enable their full enjoyment of their course or pursue additional areas of interest. Learners will reflect on their learning half way through the course with a mid-term review and again at the end of the course with an end of learner course evaluation.

Course Materials

All materials needed for the course will be supplied. Please bring a packed lunch unless you are attending a course where lunch is provided. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for a farm and animal environment and take into account the weather conditions on the day. Refreshments are provided for all course days and personal protective equipment where required.

What can learners do next/progress onto?

Learners may progress onto the Family Learning with Nature course or explore the STEM courses Starting your own Small Business or the Getting Closer to the Workplace course. In the Wellbeing and Independence category learners may be interested in the Countryside Ways to Wellbeing Course and Animal Care.
