Dyslexia and Maths, Dyscalculia and Maths Anxiety

A course split between theory and practical ways to support someone to improve their maths and number skills.

Who is the course aimed at?

This course is aimed at parents, carers, adults with dyslexia or dyscalculia and education staff who wish to develop a deeper understanding of maths learning difficulties, the impact of dyscalculia and dyslexia on maths learning and exploring strategies to support learners in developing their number and maths skills.

Entry requirements

The course is for Staffordshire residents aged 19+ who want to learn more about Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and Maths anxiety.

Course content

The course will focus on the definition of dyslexia and dyscalculia; reasons for difficulties; multisensory strategies; differences between types of difficulties; reasonable adjustments to put into action; maths outside the classroom; interventions to reduce maths anxiety; theories of causation; types of testing, memory styles; and wider coping strategies. Focus on reducing maths anxiety.

Learning methods

It will be delivered face to face in small groups of 10.

Learning Support

Small group size facilitated to ensure a good deal of individual support during sessions. 1-to-1s are available on request to support those with additional learning needs.

Course assessments

Learners are given individual learning plans and various in session activities to assess learner progress.

Learning materials

All learning materials are provided for the course. This includes Index cards; 20 x 5 coloured cards, business card size; black felt tip pens; and wooden or plastic numbers

What can learners do next after this course?

Individual advice and guidance is offered at the end of  the course directing learners to other Dyslexia Association of Staffordshire (DAS) courses; other adult community learning courses; and further course provider opportunities for dyscalculia.

This course is fully funded so there are no course fees.

All of our courses are delivered by expert local learning partners across Staffordshire.  This specific course is delivered by Dyslexia Association of Staffordshire.
