Learn how to reuse waste materials to make new items for a community garden project in a local park. Create items for your own home and garden too – learn upcycling techniques and skills.
Who is the course aimed at?
The course is aimed at Staffordshire residents aged 19+ who live in a Staffordshire not Stoke-on-Trent postcode. This course aims to develop transferable skills that will benefit individuals and help them to develop skills that will contribute to their community and be more independent. Learners will take part in creating a community shared area with the theme of sustainability and use innovated ways to repurpose waste materials, together they will work on creating a vibrant nature area in a local community park.
Entry Requirements
No entry requirements are required but an interest in supporting the community, together with woodworking or gardening would be an advantage. Potential learners must be willing to commit to all course sessions and be willing to work towards learning aims and complete a learner journal.
Course Content
Develop skills that will contribute to your community, skills that you can use to benefit your community and be make you more independent. In a community park setting learn about upcycling / using reclaimed materials. Create outdoor furniture, bird feeders and bird boxes as part of a community relaxation garden. Make a communal scarecrow as part of the the Hednesford Park Community Festival to bring communities together.
Learning Methods
Face to face learning in a classroom or outdoor learning environment, using a variety of user-friendly learning styles and activities.
Learner Support
Learning support is offered throughout the course to meet learners’ needs, whether it be a scribe, a reading pen, an Ipad or a person to build confidence and point learners in the right direction.
Course assessment
Learners will be assessed at the start of the course to find their starting point and working level, throughout the course learners will be assessed formatively with tutor/learner reviews. At the end of the course learners can reflect on their progress and how they have achieved, tutors will assess learners summatively. Learners will be given the opportunity each week to review their learning and identify where they may need extra support to enable their full enjoyment and progress.
Course Materials
Come suitably dressed for activities both in and outdoors, i.e., warm clothes and a coat for winter weather. All materials for the course will be provided. You will be required to complete a learner journal. If you need glasses for reading or any learning aids please bring these along too. Please bring a packed lunch.
What can learners do next/progress onto?
Learners can progress onto the Small Business Ideas course if they wish to pursue Upcycling as a small business idea.
