Countryside Ways to Wellbeing and Animal Care

To promote positive health and wellbeing and to learn new skills in countryside related activities, to include conservation, rural crafts, therapeutic gardening together with learning how to look after and care for a range of pet and farm animals.

Who is the course aimed at?

The course is aimed at Staffordshire residents aged 19+ who live in a Staffordshire not Stoke-on-Trent postcode. The course is for individuals experiencing or recovering from mental ill health or people who have a learning difficulty/disability or unemployed and want to support their wellbeing and independence.

Entry Requirements

No prior knowledge or experience is required but an interest in the countryside, animals and nature would be an advantage. Potential learners must be willing to commit to all course sessions and be willing to work towards learning aims and complete a learner journal. Learning support is available throughout your course if required.

Course Content

This course promotes health and wellbeing carrying out activities involving the countryside and animals i.e. nature and mindfulness walks, countryside crafts i.e. willow weaving, seasonal flower arranging, gardening and healthy eating, animal care i.e. dog walking, donkey/horse care and small pet care.

Learning Methods

Face to face learning in a classroom or outdoor learning environment, using a variety of learning styles and activities.

Learner Support

Learning support is offered throughout the course to meet learners’ needs, whether it be a scribe, a reading pen, an Ipad or 1:1 classroom support to build confidence and guide learners in the right direction.

Course assessment

Learners will be reviewed at the start, middle and end of the course. Learners will be given the opportunity each week to reflect with their learning and identify where they may need extra support to achieve their desired learning goals and to enable their full enjoyment of their course or pursue additional areas of interest. Learners will reflect in their learning half way through the course with a mid-term review and again at the end of the course with an end of learner course evaluation.

Course Materials

All materials needed for the course will be supplied. Please bring a packed lunch unless you are attending a course where lunch is provided. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for a farm and animal environment and take into account the weather conditions on the day. Refreshments are provided for all course days and personal protective equipment where required.

What can learners do next/progress onto?

Learners may be interested in the STEM course in Getting Closer to the Workplace. Family learning courses are also available in Family Fun on a Budget and Family Learning with Nature. Learners may wish to do animal related courses with other providers.
