Promote positive health and wellbeing. This course is based around animals, cooking, nature, gardening, woodworking and creative rural crafts with lots of practical learning activities and ways to promote independence.
Who is the course aimed at?
The course is aimed at Staffordshire residents aged 19+ who live in a Staffordshire not Stoke-on-Trent postcode. The course is for individuals experiencing or recovering from mental ill health or people who have a learning difficulty/disability and want to support their wellbeing and independence.
Entry Requirements
No prior knowledge or experience is required but an interest in the countryside, animals and nature would be an advantage. Potential learners must be willing to commit to all course sessions and be willing to work towards learning aims and complete a learner journal. Learning support is available throughout your course if required.
Course Content
Learn new skills in animal care, gardening, cookery, conservation, and seasonal crafts. Experience Nature’s Calendar and take part in Winter nature walks, container gardening and gardening maintenance. Creativity activities will include easy to create one-pot cooking and ways to budget as well as woodworking and willow craft. You will build up your own individual learning journal week by week and we will support you along the way!
Learning Methods
Face to face learning in a classroom or outdoor learning environment, using a variety of learning styles and activities.
Learner Support
Learning support is offered throughout the course to meet learners’ needs, whether it be a scribe, a reading pen, an Ipad or 1:1 classroom support to build confidence and guide learners in the right direction.
Course assessment
Learners will be reviewed at the start of the course to find their starting point and working level, throughout the course learners will be assessed formatively with tutor/learner reviews. At the end of the course learners can reflect on their progress and how they have achieved, tutors will assess learners summatively. Learners will be given the opportunity each week to review their learning and identify where they may need extra support to enable their full enjoyment and progress.
Course Materials
Please bring appropriate clothing for the course you will be participating in e.g. a waterproof, together with boots or sturdy shoes as some activities will be outdoors. A packed lunch is required for some sessions, but for most sessions lunch is provided. All materials needed for the course will be supplied. You will be required to complete a learner journal.

Learners can progress onto the Looking After Yourself a Better Me course to further promote wellbeing and independence.
